The actor, who moved to Australia from Wales in 1999, was cast in Spartacus after being a relatively unknown. It proved a hit for the Starz network after it aired in 2011 with Whitfield starring in all of the 13 episodes of its first season.
It was expected that Whitfield would recover from the cancer and so the network produced a six-part prequel called Spartacus - Gods of the Arena, while waiting for the actor's recovery and treatment.
